What to expect when you come…
1 The Sunday morning worship service
Our worship service each week begins at 10:00 a.m. We would call it fairly traditional, but it’s not stuffy! You will receive an Order of Service or Bulletin (a layout of the worship service) that will help guide you through the service. It also includes inserts describing upcoming events, or ongoing groups or activities, within our church. The worship service includes hymns and prayers, a choir anthem, a chat with the children before they head off to their classes and then a bible-based message from the minister. You can either sing the hymns from the Book of Praise located in the pews, or our large screens at the front of the church. Any congregational responses can be read or sung from the Order of Service or again, from screens at the front of the church. There’s also an opportunity during the service (Offering) to support the work we do both at home and in the larger world beyond our doorstep. All told, the service is usually about an hour-and-ten-minutes in length. The dress code is pretty flexible. You’ll see shirts and ties but also golf shirts and shorts in the summer. We just want you to be comfortable and respectably dressed. We assemble in God’s name, we listen for God’s timeless Word of hope and grace, and then we reflect on how to respond to God’s encouraging message for our time.
2 Did I park in the right place?
Parking around St. Andrew’s can seem confusing, so here’s a little help with that. We do have our own parking lot that can hold around 24 cars. It’s accessed through the laneway off of Worsley Street directly behind the back of our building. Many of our people also park in various municipal parking lots including City Hall and Library (free on Sundays). Otherwise, free on-street parking on Sundays usually makes up the rest of where we tuck our vehicles. Feel free to drop any passengers at our front doors on Owen St. Our sanctuary and Gathering Hall are accessible by elevator through those doors. There is also a ramp to our main entrance that can be accessed from the sidewalk on Worsley Street.
3 Sunday School and Nursery
At St. Andrew’s we have a Nursery for children up to 3 years of age and you can feel free to drop them off immediately before the service, or if you wish, you can also stay with them, particularly if they are struggling to adjust to your absence. Just ask the ushers at the top of the steps where the Nursery is and they will be glad to show you. It’s actually very handy to the worship space. The Nursery is always staffed by very warm and friendly people, and they will lovingly look after your children. Likewise with the staff in our Sunday School (which we also call the “Church School”). If your child is here for the first time, our staff will quickly identify them as they come out of the service after the “Children’s Time” conversation with the minister. They’ll make sure that they get to the age-appropriate class. Then, after the service, when we all go downstairs to the Gathering Hall for coffee, tea and conversation, you’ll find them in the adjacent large room called the Activity Room.
4 We really respect your decision to gather with us
When you come to our worship service on a Sunday morning (or even on Christmas Eve for that matter), you will be respected, cherished, welcomed and allowed to “blend-in”. You will not be singled out or asked to stand before the congregation. Above all, we are simply glad that you too have come to worship God and to seek the blessing of God’s love and care in your life.
